Glossary

Landscape: A mosaic of different land cover and land use patches within a geographical region.

Landscape ecology: The sub-discipline of ecology interested in understanding the pattern of interaction of biological and cultural communities within a landscape.

Landscape perspective: An approach to conservation that explicitly recognizes the importance of spatial relationships and adjacency in conservation planning and implementation. This tends to involve larger spatial scales and management across legal and jurisdictional boundaries, often inside and outside protected areas.

Living Landscape: Landscapes that change with the changing needs of people and wildlife for space and resources.

Living Landscapes Program (LLP): A cross-cutting program within WCS-International dedicated to developing wildlife-based strategies for the conservation of large, wild ecosystems integrated in wider landscapes of human influence.

Living Landscapes Core Sites: Long-term sites where LLP tools and models are being developed and implemented. These presently include Madidi in Northwestern Bolivia, Maya forest in Guatemala, the Eastern Steppe of Mongolia and Glover's Reef in Belize. Past sites are in Northern Congo and Eastern Ecuador. Other sites that may be added in the future include: the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Northern Plains of Cambodia, and Antongil Bay-Masoala Peninsula, Madagascar.

Landscape Species: Species that use large, ecologically diverse areas and often havesignificant impacts on the structure and function of natural ecosystems. Their requirements in time and space make landscape species particularly susceptible to human alteration and use of natural landscapes.

Landscape Species Approach: A strategy for site-based conservation where the spatial requirements of landscape species are mapped and compared to the spatial distribution of human activities. This process helps maximize the efficiency of conservation investments by identifying where, when and why the needs of some wildlife clash with the needs of some people.
